WHO: End of COVID-19 pandemic ‘in sight’
WATCH | WHO says end of COVID-19 pandemic ‘in sight’
The COVID-19 pandemic may be nearing its end as the number of weekly reported deaths from the virus globally reached its lowest level since March 2020, the World Health Organization declares.
From Sept. 5 to 11, WHO logged a 22% decrease in deaths from the virus with over 11,000 fatalities. It added that the number of weekly infections around the world also decreased by 28% from the same week, with over 3.1 million new cases.
We are never in a better position to end the pandemic. We are not there yet, but the end is in sight,» WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says in a virtual conference.
However, the WHO chief still urges nations to maintain their vigilance and likened the pandemic to a marathon race. «Now is the worst time to stop running — now is the time to run harder and make sure we cross the line and reap the rewards of all the hardwork,» Ghebreyesus says.
